The EU is reportedly set to fine Apple around $500 million for anticompetitive behavior in the music streaming market, following a case initiated by Spotify in 2019. The EU believes Apple's App Store policies unfairly favor Apple Music over third-party rivals by blocking them from informing customers about alternative subscription methods to evade Apple's commission fees. While the ruling won't force Apple to permit alternative in-app payment methods, it will require music streaming app developers to be able to freely link out to their websites for subscriptions. Apple's upcoming changes in response to the Digital Market Act will still involve commission fees, which Spotify's CEO has criticized as unworkable.
