Google's Massive Spending on Employee Severance and Cost-Cutting Measures

Google's parent company, Alphabet, is expecting to incur $700 million in severance costs for the first quarter of 2024, following additional layoffs at the start of the year. The company had previously laid off 12,000 employees in January 2023 and recorded $2.1 billion in employee severance and related charges for the year. The earnings report also revealed a 13% year-over-year increase in revenue for Q4, reaching $86.3 billion, and a 9% year-over-year increase for the fiscal year, reaching $307.4 billion. CEO Sundar Pichai attributed the layoffs to a shift in economic conditions after a period of rapid growth, and affected staff were provided with severance packages and other benefits.
