Elizabeth Holmes Begins Prison Sentence for Theranos Scandal

Elizabeth Holmes, founder of Theranos, has been taken into custody to serve an 11-year sentence for fraud and conspiracy. Holmes had been free on bail since her conviction in January 2022, but her bid to remain free while appealing her conviction was rejected. She will serve her sentence in a minimum-security federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas. Holmes and her former partner, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, had promised to revolutionize healthcare with a technology that could quickly scan for diseases with a few drops of blood taken with a finger prick. However, serious flaws in Theranos’s technology were exposed, leading to the company's collapse and criminal charges against both Holmes and Balwani.
