Minneapolis experiences alarming surge in auto thefts

Auto thefts in Minneapolis are on track to break last year's record, with 6,114 motor vehicle thefts reported so far this year, a 50% increase compared to the same period last year. The city council is discussing ways to combat the rise in car thefts, considering the success of neighboring jurisdictions like St. Paul, where auto thefts have decreased by about 36%. The Minneapolis Police Department has identified Kias and Hyundais, particularly models without up-to-date theft prevention systems, as the most commonly stolen vehicles.
