Retailers in the US on high alert as theft and 'flash rob' attacks surge
US retailers, including Walmart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, Home Depot, and Foot Locker, are expressing alarm over rising theft and organized shoplifting incidents, impacting their earnings and inventory. The increase in theft incidents involving violence or threats of violence has been particularly concerning. The surge in theft comes as consumers face the rising costs of living and interest rates, making it more difficult to afford purchases. Retailers have been implementing security measures such as locking up everyday products, installing transparent walls, and scattering call buttons in aisles. However, these measures have not proven to be effective deterrents, with incidents of blowtorch use and "flash rob" attacks on the rise. The National Retail Federation's survey revealed that retailers lost an estimated $94.5 billion to shrink in 2021 alone, with a majority reporting an increase in organized retail crime during the pandemic.
