Comedian Dave Chappelle has defended his real estate purchases in Yellow Springs, Ohio, saying he is interested in restoring the cultural and creative economy that made the town a haven for art, music, culture and academia. Chappelle, who spent his middle school years in Yellow Springs, has purchased 20 properties in the area, which some residents have criticized. However, Chappelle's outdoor comedy shows have reportedly commissioned $12m in direct and indirect economic activity for the state of Ohio, including $4m for the village.
