The Average American's 401(k) Savings: A Surprising Revelation

Recent data from Fidelity Investments reveals that the median balance in 401(k) plans is $23,800, indicating that most Americans have a long way to go to reach their retirement savings goals. Other retirement plans, such as 403(b) accounts and individual retirement accounts, have even slimmer median savings. Baby boomers lead in savings, with an average of $212,600 in 401(k) accounts, $196,600 in 403(b) accounts, and $201,640 in IRAs. However, many boomers are approaching retirement without any savings, and Generation-X Americans have an average of only $40,000 saved. Experts recommend increasing contributions to employer-sponsored retirement accounts, such as 401(k)s, to boost savings.
