CPSC commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. consulted with an environmental group in August 2022 to discuss the legal basis for a potential gas stove regulation. The CPSC has denied drafting standards to regulate gas stoves, but Republican lawmakers have criticized the Biden administration's attempts to regulate gas stoves, and have proposed legislation curbing the federal government's ability to take such action.
