California advances AI safety oversight with new third-party audit rules

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed two AI-safety bills creating a registry and ethical rules for outside auditors, and establishing criteria and credentials checks for Independent Verification Organizations to assess AI risks, with backing from Anthropic and OpenAI.
