Southeast Asia Challenges EU's AI Regulations with Hands-Off Approach

Southeast Asian countries are taking a business-friendly approach to artificial intelligence (AI) regulation, diverging from the European Union's (EU) push for globally harmonized rules. A confidential draft of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (ASEAN) "guide to AI ethics and governance" reveals a voluntary and culturally sensitive framework that does not prescribe unacceptable risk categories. The ASEAN guide aims to limit compliance burdens and foster innovation, aligning closely with other leading AI frameworks such as the United States' NIST AI Risk Management Framework. This approach contrasts with the EU's AI Act, which seeks to regulate tech firms and disclose copyrighted and AI-generated content. While the EU aims for a global standard, ASEAN's preference for member states to determine their own policies puts them on a different track.
