Cruise has received permission to operate its robotaxis across all of San Francisco 24/7, making it the nation's testing ground for how autonomous vehicles operate in a city without geofencing or time restrictions. The expansion has been opposed by city transportation leaders citing incidents where Cruise and Waymo vehicles disrupted traffic and Muni transit. Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt called the expansion a pivotal moment for the business. The company has been operating at a deficit and lost $561 million in Q1 2023. Cruise's power users will have access to robotaxi rides during daytime hours in select neighborhoods.
