Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee Make Tony Awards History as Nonbinary Acting Winners

Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee made history at the Tony Awards by becoming the first openly nonbinary people to win. Newell won Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for their role in Shucked, and Ghee won Leading Actor in a Musical for their role in Some Like It Hot. Both performers agreed to nominations in gendered categories, but hope awards shows will do away with the actor/actress binary. Newell thanked the audience for seeing them as a queer, nonbinary, fat, Black little baby from Massachusetts.
