Dog Stars Flops at $8M Opening as Spider-Man Extends Box Office Reign

Disney/20th Century’s The Dog Stars opened to $8 million domestic from about 3,330 theaters, a fifth-place, underwhelming debut for an $80M+ production; Spider-Man: Brand New Day remained the weekend’s top draw with $22.2 million and a domestic total near $891 million, as The Odyssey ($14.6M) rose to second, followed by Coyote vs. Acme ($13.5M) in third and Insidious: Out of the Further ($10.1M) in fourth. The results cap a lukewarm close to summer box office.
