Sense and Sensibility reimagined as a cooler, soberer Austen update with Daisy Edgar-Jones

A fresh, downbeat reimagining of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility casts Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as the Dashwood sisters in a cooler, more austere London-to-Devon setting. The film sharpens some dynamics—Mrs. Dashwood’s practical move, Edward Ferrars’ reticence, Marianne’s romance—while introducing odd casting choices (Brandon played by Herbert Nordrum; Mr. Palmer by Eliot Sumner) that feel off-kilter. Fiona Shaw’s Mrs. Jennings is the scene-stealer and the production is visually polished, but the overall sensibility is leaner and less warm than the beloved 1995 version.
