Controversial Legacy: Karl Lagerfeld's Iconic Moments and Honored Work at Met Gala

The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is giving Karl Lagerfeld his own museum show and a Lagerfeld-themed Met Gala in his honor, just four years after his death at 85. The exhibit, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," celebrates the famed German designer's contributions to fashion, including 150 garments and sketches from his 65-year career spanning his work at Chloé, Fendi, and Chanel, as well as his own namesake label. While Lagerfeld was revered in the fashion industry for injecting youthful energy and verve into moribund brands, he was also beset by controversy toward the end of his life, frequently offering his opinions about everything from fat people to the #MeToo movement and Syrian refugees.
