Oscar-Nominated Director Mark Rydell, Behind On Golden Pond, Dies at 97

Mark Rydell, the Oscar-nominated director of Cinderella Liberty, The Rose, The Cowboys and Henry Fonda’s On Golden Pond, has died at 97 of natural causes in Woodland Hills. A former As the World Turns actor who became a prolific TV and film director, he directed five actors to Oscar nominations (Rupert Crosse, Marsha Mason, Bette Midler, Frederic Forrest and Sissy Spacek) and later served as West Coast artistic director at The Actors Studio, with a career spanning Broadway, television and feature films including The Reivers and the TNT biopic James Dean.
