Clive Davis, the Brooklyn-born executive who built Columbia’s rock-to-pop empire and later launched Arista, LaFace and J Records, has died at 94, leaving a legacy of discovering Whitney Houston and guiding artists from Bruce Springsteen to Santana. His career endured controversy, including a 1970s ouster and a later tax case, but his talent for spotting hits helped shape four decades of music, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and later served as Sony BMG’s Chief Creative Officer.
