CDC's Assessment of Pirola, the Mutated COVID-19 Variant: Risk Evaluation Revealed

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a risk assessment for the new BA.2.86 variant of COVID-19, known as Pirola, stating that it may be more capable of causing infection in individuals who have previously had COVID-19 or received COVID-19 vaccines. While there is no evidence that the variant makes people sicker, hospitalization rates are being closely monitored. As of now, nine cases of the Pirola variant have been identified globally, with two cases in the United States. The CDC advises getting vaccinated and following precautions such as staying home when sick, getting tested if needed, seeking treatment if at high risk, wearing a high-quality mask, improving ventilation, and practicing hand hygiene. Updated vaccines targeting the earlier omicron variant will be available earlier than anticipated, with a faster rollout expected in mid-September.
