First West Nile Virus Death Reported in Pittsburgh Area

A woman in her 80s from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has died after contracting West Nile virus, making it the first human case reported in Allegheny County this year. The woman experienced fever and weakness before being hospitalized and passing away in late September. The Allegheny County Health Department is setting up additional traps and targeting areas with mosquito pesticide. West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the US, with most people not experiencing symptoms. Severe cases can lead to encephalitis or meningitis, which can be fatal. There are currently no vaccines or disease-specific treatments for West Nile virus. Pennsylvania has reported 10 cases of the virus this year. To protect against infection, the CDC recommends using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and taking steps to control mosquitoes.
