Rapid Spread of HV.1 Variant Raises Concerns Ahead of Holidays

A new COVID-19 subvariant, JN.1, is responsible for a growing number of coronavirus hospitalizations in New Jersey and the surrounding region during the winter holidays. Although another variant, HV.1, remains dominant, JN.1 represents over 21% of new cases. Concerns arise as the number of people receiving the updated vaccine remains low. The CDC expects the booster to protect against JN.1, and new COVID tests should detect it and other strains. Vaccine coverage in New Jersey is low, with only 17.6% of eligible residents up to date. While symptoms of JN.1 are not believed to be more severe, its rapid evolution raises concerns about its ability to evade immune systems.
