Second beaver bite spurs closures and rabies testing at Cunningham Falls

A second beaver bite at Cunningham Falls State Park in Maryland led to closures of nearby areas and rabies testing after a 19-year-old fisherman was bitten near the South Beach Day Use Area; the beaver was euthanized, with rabies results pending, following another recent beaver bite in the same area that tested positive for rabies. The Houck Day Use Area, boat ramp, and Big Hunting Creek above the lake were closed to water activities while authorities monitor the situation; daytime surveillance will increase and a nighttime beaver watch will be implemented. The campground remains open, and visitors are urged to stay at least 25 yards away from beavers and report any contact to the Frederick County Health Department.
