Tech Execs Struggle with Substance Abuse Amid Rising Job Losses

A survey of over 500 tech executives conducted during the first half of 2023 revealed that many of them turned to drink and drugs to cope with job losses and high stress. Nearly 80 percent of tech workers reported taking medications, while 32 percent consumed controlled substances and 45 percent used painkillers. Additionally, 34 percent of tech executives used stimulants, and half of the respondents admitted to being heavy drinkers. The survey also found that mental health issues, including anxiety and depression, were prevalent among tech executives, with layoffs and the fear of being replaced by AI negatively impacting their well-being. The report called for the tech industry to address substance abuse and mental health issues and provide support for employees.
