Hantavirus on Hondius: U.S. among nations tracing passengers who left ship after first death

The U.S. and several other countries are tracing roughly 29–40 passengers who disembarked the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius at St. Helena before the hantavirus outbreak was detected. Eight people are sick (five confirmed, three suspected) with three confirmed deaths from the Andes strain. WHO says transmission is not like COVID and cautions against panic; there is no approved medical countermeasure. The ship is moving toward the Canary Islands as authorities coordinate disembarkation and onward travel guidance, while U.S. travelers in California, Georgia, and Arizona are being monitored.
