Portugal's Blind Spot: Unseen Racial Disparities

Portugal faces challenges in addressing racial disparities in healthcare due to its lack of racial data collection, a practice common in Europe. This absence of data obscures the extent of health inequities affecting marginalized communities, including Black, Romani, and migrant populations. Despite having a universal healthcare system, Portugal's reluctance to gather racial data stems from historical and cultural factors, including a national narrative that downplays its colonial past. Efforts to collect and utilize racial data are emerging, but progress is slow, and systemic racism remains a significant barrier.
