Former Mississippi sheriff’s deputy Hunter Elward was sentenced to about 20 years in prison for his involvement in the racist torture of two Black men. The torture, carried out by a group of law enforcement officers known as "The Goon Squad," involved stun guns, racial slurs, and a mock execution gone awry. The officers pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy against rights, obstruction of justice, and deprivation of rights under color of law. The victims have filed a civil lawsuit against the department and called for the sheriff's resignation.
