eBay Fined $3M for Harassment Campaign Against Boston Couple

eBay has agreed to pay a $3 million penalty to settle criminal charges after several employees stalked and harassed a Boston couple who criticized the company on their website. The harassment campaign included mailing disturbing items, sending threats on social media, and inviting strangers to the couple's home for sexual encounters. eBay was charged with stalking, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice, and has entered a deferred prosecution agreement, admitting to the conduct and agreeing to pay the penalty, hire a compliance monitor, and make compliance program enhancements. Seven former employees or contractors involved in the harassment have been convicted, with the ringleader sentenced to 57 months in prison. The couple has filed a civil lawsuit against eBay and the co-conspirators, with the trial scheduled for May 2025.
