Family of Stephen Smith raises funds for exhumation and autopsy

The family of Stephen Smith, who was found dead in 2015 not far from the Murdaugh home, has raised over $44,000 to exhume his body and perform an independent autopsy. State police reopened the case in June 2021 after finding new evidence during the investigation into the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh. Smith's family believes he was murdered, and they want an independent determination of his cause of death. The fundraising page raised almost three times its original goal of $15,000.
