Kansas City homeowner pleads not guilty in Ralph Yarl shooting investigated as hate crime

Andrew Lester pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault and armed criminal action as he made his first appearance over the shooting of Ralph Yarl on Wednesday in Clay County Court. The shooting is now being probed by the Justice Department as a hate crime. Ralph Yarl, a Black teenager, was shot twice by white homeowner Andrew Lester after he accidentally rang the doorbell of the wrong house in Kansas City. Lester has been charged with two felonies, but not attempted murder or a hate crime. Ralph Yarl is now recovering at home.
