California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will triple its resources in the Los Angeles area to combat organized retail theft. This decision comes in response to recent large-scale burglaries in the region. The CHP's efforts in battling retail crime have been successful, but additional help is needed. The announcement follows the establishment of a new organized retail theft task force by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and other local leaders. The CHP's existing task force has made over 1,250 arrests and recovered more than $30 million in stolen merchandise since its creation in 2019.
