Charges may be dropped against former San Francisco Fire Commissioner Don Carmignani, who was brutally beaten with a metal rod outside his mother's home in the city's Marina District earlier this month. The decision came after prosecutors received video evidence of a person they claim is Carmignani using bear spray against homeless people in another incident. Carmignani denies he is the person in the video and says he may even be prosecuted for discharging pepper spray in self-defense during the attack. The suspect, Garret Allen Doty, faces up to seven years in state prison if convicted of all charges.
