Retired Memphis police supervisor avoids termination hearing in Tyre Nichols' death with benefits.

The Memphis police supervisor present during Tyre Nichols' fatal beating retired with benefits the day before his termination hearing. Lt. DeWayne Smith was identified as the officer who retired before his firing. Seven other Memphis police officers were fired for their role in Nichols' death, and five of them were charged with second-degree murder. Smith has not been charged. The U.S. Department of Justice is reviewing the Memphis Police Department's policies on the use of force, de-escalation strategies, and specialized units in response to Nichols' death.
