Rising Homicide Rates in Birmingham and Montgomery.

A man was killed during a home invasion in southwest Birmingham, marking the city's fifth homicide in just over 48 hours. The victim was identified as Fredrick Carnell Sykes, 44. The suspect made forced entry and fired on the victim, and it is unclear whether they knew each other. Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond called the spate of violence "unacceptable" and urged anyone with information to come forward. Police have not identified a suspect or a motive.
