Savannah's 199th annual St. Patrick's Day parade took place on Friday with bands, soldiers, floats, shamrocks, and green garb. The parade is known as one of the largest in the U.S. behind New York City and Chicago. The public observance of St. Patrick's Day in the Hostess City traces its roots back to 1824. The holiday is observed on March 17 in observance of St. Patrick's death and began as a feast day and over time, turned into a secular celebration of Irish culture.
