3 Sacramento schools renamed to remove racist historical figures' names.

Three Sacramento schools named after racist historical figures, Sutter Middle School, Peter Burnett Elementary School, and Kit Carson International Academy, are getting new names. Sutter Middle School will be renamed Miwok Middle School, Peter Burnett will be renamed Suy:u Elementary, and Kit Carson will be renamed Umoja International Academy. The district has identified $550,000 in next year’s budget to use as part of the effort. The renaming committee was made up of one appointee from each trustee area, two student members, three people representing the local native community, one principal and staff member for each of the three school sites, and two district staff members who oversee the Indian Education Committee and other staff.
