Impending LAUSD Strike Threatens School Closures in Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Unified School District, the second-largest public school system in the US, may face a three-day strike starting Tuesday as negotiations with the union representing 30,000 cafeteria workers, bus drivers, custodians, and other school employees have stalled. The teachers' union, representing another 30,000 employees, has said its members will not cross the picket line. The strike could affect over 1,000 schools and half a million students. The union is seeking a 30% raise and other compensation increases, while the district is offering a 5% wage increase for the current school year and another 5% raise for the next, as well as one-time bonuses and additional raises for certain positions.
