Oklahoma approves first publicly funded religious charter school.

The Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board has approved an application for the nation's first publicly funded religious charter school, the St. Isidore of Seville Virtual Catholic Charter School. The school will offer Roman Catholic instruction and be funded by taxpayers. Opponents argue that the approval violates constitutional protections that separate church and state, and Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has called the decision unconstitutional and likely to result in legal action.
