Michigan records two cyclosporiasis deaths amid lettuce-linked outbreak

Michigan officials say two people who contracted cyclosporiasis have died; both had significant underlying conditions and dehydration may have contributed. The outbreak—linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico—has produced more than 11,000 Michigan cases and 193 hospitalizations since early May and is part of a nationwide surge across roughly 45 states. The FDA notes the deaths occurred with case data predating Taylor Farms’ July recall of central-Mexico iceberg lettuce; treatment for cyclosporiasis usually involves the antibiotic Bactrim, though healthy individuals may recover without it.
