Despite a crackdown on fentanyl trafficking and arrests in San Francisco, May was the deadliest month for fentanyl overdoses on record, with 63 people dying from accidental overdoses of the synthetic opioid. The California Highway Patrol seized more than eight pounds of fentanyl in the city's Tenderloin district and surrounding areas since May, but the number of deaths from accidental overdoses was the highest it's been since 2020. Some local politicians said the law enforcement operation would not curb the deadly opioid epidemic and called for the creation of safe consumption sites.
