Expanding Driver's License Access for Undocumented Immigrants in Massachusetts and Rhode Island

A new law in Massachusetts went into effect on Saturday, allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for a driver's license if they can provide the Registry of Motor Vehicles with a foreign passport or consular identification document. The law, known as the Work and Family Mobility Act, was initially vetoed by Governor Charlie Baker but was overridden by the legislature. Supporters of the law believe it will lead to a decline in uninsured drivers and hit-and-run crashes. The law also requires the state to ensure that people without proof of legal residence are not automatically registered to vote.
