The Biden administration is ending the Title 42 public health order, which allowed authorities to rapidly expel migrants due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The administration has prepared for the end of Title 42 with a new asylum rule and promised tougher penalties for illegal entry. However, mass releases of migrants have already begun due to overcrowding, and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has warned that the situation will be "very difficult" in the days and weeks ahead.
