California to pay $24M settlement for in-custody death of Edward Bronstein.

The family of Edward Bronstein, who died in police custody in 2020, has reached a $24 million settlement in a lawsuit against the state of California, the California Highway Patrol, and other parties. Bronstein was heard saying "I can't breathe" at least 12 times while being forcibly held on the ground by several officers. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office later determined Bronstein died from “acute methamphetamine intoxication during restraint by law enforcement.” Seven of the 10 officers and the nurse involved were criminally charged in Bronstein’s death in March of this year.
