Alaska Teen Survives Skiff Capsize as Communities Honor Two Lost at Sea

A 15-year-old boy, Parker, survived a halibut trip off St. Lawrence Island after a skiff flipped Friday; his older brother Sidney and a cousin died, and Parker was rescued Monday by a Coast Guard-assisted boat. He reportedly spent the overnight ordeal kneeling and praying as waves battered him. In response, communities across Savoonga, Gambell, Nome, Shishmaref, Teller, Wales and Nunam Iqua held a simultaneous memorial by firing guns into the ocean at 8:03 p.m. while Parker’s brother recovers at home.
