Autopsy Finds Pulmonary Edema in Saylor Hayes; Cause Still Undetermined

Georgetown County’s autopsy on 5-year-old Saylor Hayes, found Aug. 31 in the Waccamaw River on Pawleys Island, showed pulmonary edema with no external trauma. The cause and manner of death remain unknown, with a full report expected in 8–10 weeks. Saylor, who had autism, was wearing a swimsuit with an ankle tether strap and had been missing since Aug. 30; she was enrolled in the Project Lifesaver program to help locate individuals with cognitive conditions.
