Big Sur Timber Fire Expands to 24k Acres, Highway 1 Closed, Evacuations Under Way
The Timber Fire in Monterey County has grown to about 24,600 acres and is 21% contained, prompting a roughly 54-mile Highway 1 closure from the Little Sur River to Salmon Creek; evacuation orders and warnings are in effect for multiple zones, with shelter-in-place orders in some areas. About 1,600 personnel—including 123 engines, 35 hand crews, 14 helicopters, 36 dozers and 34 water tenders—are on scene, working to build and reinforce containment lines, mop up and patrol as planned burn operations near Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park were completed. The fire threatens 661 structures and started Aug. 8; the cause remains under investigation. A separate Plaskett Fire near Big Sur burned about 40 acres and also triggered evacuations.
