Des Plaines officer shoots man during hedge-trimmer confrontation in domestic dispute

Des Plaines police say 21-year-old Ayham Babidi was fatally shot after approaching an officer with an electric hedge trimmer during a domestic disturbance. Babidi allegedly brandished the trimmer and refused to drop it, prompting the officer to fire three times before aid was given. Babidi’s father disputes the police account, saying his son had bipolar disorder and was unarmed at the time. The Major Case Assistance Team is investigating, with evidence markers left at the scene.
