Destructive Storm Slams Northwest Indiana, Portage Declares Emergency

A powerful line of storms swept through Chicago and northwest Indiana, causing widespread damage, downed power lines and road closures. In Portage, Mayor Austin Bonta said police and fire are coordinating with public works as authorities urge residents to stay put. More than 290,000 NIPSCO customers were without power; Portage declared an emergency and Portage Township Schools canceled the first day of classes and activities. Reported hazards included overturned semis and power outages that shut down parts of I-65, I-94 and US-30.
