Explosive device detonated as officers closed in on Sumner property, man killed

A 46-year-old man died after detonating an explosive device as police and a K-9 unit approached him at a Sumner property following a domestic-violence call in Puyallup. Officers spent about an hour negotiating, aided by a drone and K-9 Dexter; four officers near the blast were evaluated for injuries. The Pierce County Bomb Squad is checking the property for additional devices, and detectives plan to remain on scene for several hours to ensure safety and complete the investigation.
