Hawk Fire Near Reno Triggers Mass Evacuations as Firefighters Battle Blaze

A large wildfire near Reno, dubbed the Hawk Fire, began Aug. 22 and burned more than 15,000 acres with 0% containment by Aug. 23, prompting about 42,000 evacuations and 40,000 evacuation warnings. The emergency prompted a Washoe County declaration, road closures, shelter openings, and school cancellations, with at least six people injured. More than 800 firefighters, plus National Guard support, battled dry, windy conditions as the fire ignited in the Peavine Peak area and remains under investigation for its human-caused ignition.
