Chinese Hackers Target US Government Officials in Sophisticated Espionage Operation

A senior National Security Agency official, Rob Joyce, has described the recent hack of Microsoft's cloud, resulting in the compromise of government emails, as an example of traditional espionage conducted by China. Joyce emphasized the need for the United States to defend against such attacks, stating that nation-states engage in espionage activities. The hackers targeted senior State Department officials, including the U.S. ambassador to China, and obtained access to hundreds of thousands of emails. While the attack demonstrated China's growing sophistication, both Joyce and Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft, considered it less concerning than a previous breach that affected critical infrastructure and military systems.
