Democratic Rep. Colin Allred of Texas announced his bid for Republican Sen. Ted Cruz's seat in 2024, highlighting his actions during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and his bipartisan work on veterans' issues, trade with Mexico, and legislation to spur domestic computer chip manufacturing. Texas has not elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994, but Allred is a formidable fundraiser who could rival the record set by Jaime Harrison in his 2020 campaign against Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham in South Carolina.
